Black Super Hero Musik - Vol. 1: Issue #1
reviewed by ZEROSYSTEM
A few days ago, a good friend of mine and Producer Curtis Metcalf made a post on Facebook asking for people to post links to their latest BandCamp projects and I figured I'd keep a look out for some stand out tapes to feature on the blog but I wasn't expecting this.
Enter: Black Super Hero Musik, a joint project between Jamal STEELE & EFAYEME. I can think of only a few times in my life that I lost composure listening to an album and this is one of them. Back in the 90's I was a comic and hip-hop head so to be able to hear golden era style production with top notch lyricism from emcees keenly aware of the subject material made me take note. So much so that I listened to this 3 track EP for the rest of the day wondering how were they able to capture the characters so well in sonic form.
Issue #1 starts with T'Challa, a lounge style track with Jamal STEELE & EFAYEME tag teaming it like Camp Lo in their prime. Next up is the silky smooth Ororo Munroe which production wise has some of the sickest drums I've heard this year. Carl Lucas ends the EP exactly the way Power Man would do it, a right hook to the jaw. I could go into a little more depth but I'd rather you experience them for yourself. Press play and experience what it's like to go from Wakanda to New York in 11 minutes.

Just a quick note about this tape, it's almost like teenage love. I got a lot of good and nervous energy listening to it not knowing what to expect after the next track and that is sorely missing in today's beat tapes.
One of the standout tracks on .LOVE.MAD.CRUEL. (which was SoundCloud only) was .let.you.know.remix. Now I got to be a little bias here, I've always loved that sample but the way it was flipped really did it justice so I wish that he included it on the BandCamp tape. .norfolk.beach. on the other hand changes the energy up with a soulful beat over an Busta Rhymes acapella keeping it smooth as sippin' whiskey.
All in all .eric.champloo. put together a solid beat tape that anyone would be proud to have in their collection so check it out and if you can dig it cop it.

Lé Real 現実 - I'll Be Alright w/ xfruge
I haven’t felt my pulse since ‘02
I haven’t been myself since ‘16
And for that there’s so many bullets I owe you
The old me would turn our DMs to a crime scene
And there’s many more bullets that I owe all of them
But now I walk a different path, I never follow them
Cuz I know that the road leads
To a forest where the soul bleeds
That’s where the red fern grows
The love is high so it’ll combat the lows
Colder and colder, my skin grows
The map my skin shows
Receives an additional line
That’s why this year I decided to alter mine
A semi-melancholy odyssey
Cuz I’m becoming everything I thought I’d never be
Look in the mirror, there’s a person I cannot I
But it’s ok imma be alright
It’s ok imma be alright
Imma be alright
Blinded by the apathy but still ain’t lost my
Propaganda & Mathematics
into the pine.
Kiezin - Hot Rod Collection
This surprised the hell out to me.
It's been a while since I really sat back an listened to hip-hop because I've seen it all and played it all in the underground scene but while I was scrolling down my timeline on facebook, Kiezin's album came up. I was curious as to what the brother had been up to lately so I hit play on the BandCamp link and was instantly transported back to the year 2003.
Do you remember what it was like when you first heard 9th Wonder's mixtape 9th Invented the Remix before Little Brother dropped? Yeah that feeling right there family. Just when you thought it was all over someone comes along and breathes life back into the culture. Like a deer caught in the headlights I was frozen in a time in which I never thought I would visit again with the smokey midnight sound of Digital Dash playing in the background (while remembering I have a 64' Rivera that I need to put in the shop) Sluggaz with it's dreamlike Harp sample over southern slang, Caught where he channels his inner Dilla and the 80's Miami flare on AMG's, this album is the embodiment of everything that is perfect within hip-hop.
With a mix of Lo-Fi, 90's acapellas and Jazz laden beats Kiezin has proved that there are still artist today that can make a man dream dreams again just by hearing their sound and it also reminds me that I got a hot rod or two that I need to put in the shop.
Please Purchase Kiezin - Hot Rod Collection on BandCamp.
