The jazz innovators? Black country musicians? Gospel, fusion, funk, and alternative Black artists? Why does it seem like crossover appeal gets rewarded more than musical diversity?

This isn't a criticism of the artists. It's a critique of an industry that has reduced one of the richest musical traditions in the world into only a handful of categories.
