Classic Dick Gregory LP originally released in 1970 on Poppy Records. It's interesting to note how little things have changed since the release of this album in 1970. In the nine years since Dick Gregory first appeared on vinyl, he'd built up quite a reputation for his strident political beliefs, evolving from a standup comedian into a social commentator, and Frankenstein resembles a comedy album only so far as Gregory manages to get laughs in between pointed jabs at society and the government. Yes, it can seem a bit preachy, and yes, the delivery is very groovy (you can only hear him say "dig it now" so many times before it starts to grate), but the message is what's important: No matter how many important strides are made, race continues to be a factor in the way people treat each other, in the way laws are made, and in the way society as a whole functions. Maybe the names of the protagonists and antagonists have changed, but the message of this album still carries a lot of weight, even into the new millennium. - all music guide For more Classic Black Cinema and Media, follow ReelBlack on YouTube
The Vinyl Exam 159: West Coast Nuggets with motion_correct
The backstory behind this episode is simple enough. Sama was hanging out with motion_correct, listening to some records and jamming, when suddenly one track snapped to the foreground. The song sounded grungy and epic by all means, and it instantly became clear we needed to discuss this on the podcast. So the next day, Sama treks back to motion_correct’s house to record a quick chat about this 4-side compilation album featuring some incredible West Coast Nuggets. A rare groove mix anthology featuring (in alphabetical order) Cinturón Negro, Curtis Metcalf, Erotnas and ZEROSYSTEM. Each individual mix is about 10 to 12 minutes long and for added mystic for these projects I will not be posting the mix order or start and stop times for each mix.
A few months ago Keith and Sama recorded an episode of The Vinyl Exam in VAMP, the Oakland record store. Unfortunately the audio was lost to time (and computer glitches), but after running into Tracy at a local record swap in LA and set up this conversation between Keith and Tracy where they talk records, music and VAMP's 5th anniversary.

My own jazz interpretation of The Last Poets' Right On! album. I kept it as dark and heavy as the words being spoken. - ZEROSYSTEM
142: 21st Century Blaxploitation (Paris DJs Mix)
by The Vinyl Exam
Six years ago, Keith was asked (and happily accepted) to put together a mix of blaxploitation-vibe songs made in the 21st century, as Volume 3 of a mix series on Paris DJs. This is that mix, released six years ago to coincide with Big Pimp Jones' second freestyle album 'Jimmy Ruckus and the Five Fingers of Death'. Keith took a liberty or two and grabbed a song or two from the 90s but in general stayed true to the promise. The mix was specifically done with songs that were readily available at the time and shouldn't be that hard or expensive to track down today. Hope you enjoy!
Inspired by Sama's harmonica series, Keith begins a series of his own focusing on music from New Orleans (of varying levels of obscurity). First up, Keith takes a look at the discography of drummer Stanton Moore, a founding member of the funk band Galactic who has become a New Orleans ambassador and respected drummer.

After taking these herbs if you start to loose feeling in your arms and legs then it's the good stuff. After listening to this tape the colors may seem brighter and the food may taste that much better, but it only last while the tape is rolling. A new foray into rhythm brought to us by Northern Light@ & Treru courtesy of o-nei-ric Tapes.

I spoke with Erotnas about an upcoming project a while ago and he told me about his past listening to old reggae shows and such while recording them with his handy tape deck. Well after purchasing this cassette I have to say the feeling has been fully translated to this release. I actually felt like I was listening to something that was supposed to be long forgotten and forbidden, part of the reason why I love lo-fi music. This tape is filled with extremely rare clips of reggae shows all with the knowledge that aside from this release you'll never hear the majority of this music again.
The tape is here http://erotnas.bandcamp.com and you can listen to the teaser here.

This is The Shameless Review Blog and it seems my entire life has lead to this which feels me with a profound sadness. Dammit this isn't fair.
