Torraine Walker - Black Male Studies Sessions Episode 7: New Masters.
Every 2 to 4 years in America the Black electorate, political parties and political candidates do what I call “the dance:” politicians show up in Black neighborhoods, lip service is given to Black issues, handouts are given to well-connected Black gatekeepers, but the material conditions of poor and working class black neighborhoods remain the same. On this episode of the Black Male Studies Sessions, Dr. Tommy J. Curry and I discuss the voluntary political servitude of Black voters via gatekeepers and how Black men are demonized and left out of even this optics based process. This series is sponsored by the African American Men’s Historical Society. The AMHIS is a Black American men’s intellectual society focused on the preservation, history and empowerment of Black men. Torraine Walker - Black Male Studies Sessions Episode 6: American Devils.
Black men and boys have long been cast as America’s “folk devils” — villains blamed for crime, chaos, and moral decline. In this episode I talk with Professor Tommy J. Curry, Ph.D, author of The Man-Not and a leading scholar of Black Male Studies, to expose the history, hypocrisy, and real-world harm behind this deadly stereotype.
Torraine Walker - Black Male Studies Sessions Episode 5: Lynching Boogeyman.
The hanging death of Trey Reed in Mississippi - one of many similar deaths - speaks to the dehumanization and destruction of Black Male bodies from the Middle Passage to the present day. On this episode of the Black Male Studies Sessions, Dr. Tommy J. Curry discusses how sustained demonization, generational terror, and sociopolitical and economic exclusion leads to Black Male bodies taking the brunt of white supremacist animosity…and how anyone of any gender or ethnicity can participate in that process. This series is sponsored by the African American Men’s Historical Society. The AMHIS is a Black American men’s intellectual society focused on the preservation, history and empowerment of Black men. Everytime they do some people have an issue with that and the most recent event brought out extreme vitriol. Tonight I'll be speaking with gentlemen connected to the movement about their goals and the backlash.
Torraine Walker - The Kids Aren't Alright
America is having an education crisis. Black students are having an education catastrophe. Tonight I'll be discussing these issues with Laverne Mickens & Dr. Charles Cole, two educators invested in Black students.
